Melbourne Cup Lead Up Events (COTC etc.)

G'day all, just chasing some assistance. Think I'm heading to the Melbourne Cup for the first time on tuesday and don't really have any intention of going again, turned off by the crowds but just want to go to one and make the most of the day(s). I was just wondering about any lead up events people go to? I know the call of the card is on Monday at lunch and was wondering if the $125 for a ticket is worthwhile? I also know of a good calcutta on the Sunday night but wasn't planning on going up until the Monday so does anyone know of any other calcuttas or anything on Cup eve? Any help greatly appreciated.

You've pretty much mentioned the two major lead up events from a social perspective. Call of the card Monday at lunch at the Crown is certainly worth a ticket. The Calcutta on the Sunday night isn't bad either- that was also held at crown last year
