Caulfield R5 NO. 6 PELLIZOTTI

$5.50 in prepost markets but profiles as the standout poor betting value in the race. The market is attracted by his 3rd to Innocent Gamble on Australia day where he came from well back and made up good ground. The major factor about that race though was that it was run in very moderate overall time with a very moderate last 600m. By comparison the Fillies division won by Crystal Lily (following race) was 4L faster overall and close enough to 4L faster over the last 600m(As i stated earlier in the week). Those figures don't sit well compared too some of the other good chances here. Even worse he will more than likely get back in the ruck which disadvantages him even more.

Sandown R4 NO. 8 ESPRIT DE BULLET

This horse profiles as clear lay today, speed figures of recent don't represent the price and the market is very attracted to it's last run when flashed home as always. The last 600m it ran in that race was only moderate though and it would have improve considerably to win this race. The overall time and sectionals will be much stronger in this race and yes it will be closer to the speed today but backing these horses with such profile's will leave your pockets much lighter longterm.

I'm going to have a go today:

MValley R2 No1 TOLLESPRIT

Was the class runner last time and duly saluted. Think it's looking for further now, and it's get-back style will go against it today. Believe True Persuasion is a promising up and comer, and it's last race was full of merit. Will have the chance to lead and control the race today........will make it v.hard for Tollesprit to get balanced and make up ground over the concluding stages.

Doomben R6 NO. 6 ARCTIC ECHO

Standout lay in this race as it's figures are below what it's prepost price is representing. Gets back and the market is latching onto the fourth it ran last start, but the figures from that race are only average and the race was run in slow time. It's overall career figures are also below the top contenders here.

Warwick Farm R6 No. 10 SUNSET COAST

Profiles poorly today and currently $6 prepost markets, will be back midfield and would have to improve considerably more to win this race as there are four others with better speed figures. JUSTIFIER profiles well as she is going really well this campaign with speed figures on top here and should be able to skip across and control the race or settle handy. $4.50 avail early today / $4 still looks overs. Main dangers are 4,11 & 8.

Rosehill R4 No. 6 Danleigh

Profiles as the standout lay in this race, last start his figures were well below par, yes they went slow but his last 600m was very poor. Will get back to last or thereabouts and this race is stronger than at his previous start, at 5/1 in prepost markets he is well unders.

Pluggerduck

 wrote Feb 20 2010 at 10:38am2010-02-20 10:38:07

Toptipster i made a profit on the race laying it even though it won. It drifted heaps from when i layed it at $6.20 and when it got too around $9.50 i traded off and greened up so no matter who won i made a profit.
$500 lay @ $6.20 = $2,600 i then backed him at $9.6 for $323 to take a Profit of around $170 no matter what horse won. You can also work it so you either lose nothing if it wins(danleigh) or profit if he loses, you achieve this by Laying him for $500 @ $6.20 and then backing him for $302 @ $9.60 which would give you a profit of around $187 if it loses and $0 if it wins. Not bad hey !! The program does all this for you at the touch of a button.

Whiz i also forgot to mention the most important feature ! and that is the greening up button.

Might have a go at this today...

Warwick Farm R2 No 1 ACTRICE

Only had one start for a 5th in the Gimcrack when well fancied $2.25 favourite. Blake Shinn never seems to be able to get the best out of Gai's mounts so I think the evens has to be a huge risk.

I must say im not completely sold on that lay of the day tip whatashotbyseve..
5th in a Gimcrack on a bog track that day is pretty good form for something like this, was well fancied on debut shows that it clearly showed ability most likely on dry tracks.. I wish you luck but i wont be laying it, is a jump and run thing and gate 1 is ideal for a horse like this, blake shinn on a front runner can be hard to run down..

Sandown Race 2 No. 6 Off The Planet

Her overall figures are well below her given price in the prepost markets, her last start eye catching 2nd was run in very moderate time but the market seems to have taken notice on that run. She would have to produce her best figures to win this so at around $4 she's very poor value.

toptipster

Pluggerduck

TT don't be put off by by the Danleigh run in the apollo stakes because as you know he came from well back in the field that day to run down stablemate Rangirangdoo but unfortunately they went mad and was set up for a swooper the last 600m was the slowest of the day. That's the exact conditions Danleigh needs to win at this level and he got them here. The time rating was sound given the fast pace but certainly nothing special. Danleigh will be a risk next start if the race is run at a more average tempo.

Profiles extremely poor today. His first up win looked good to the naked eye but the overall time was slow with the last 600m also slow. From a wide draw he doesn't have the early speed to cross so oliver will have to either try and snag in somewhere or go back more likely the latter. His figures would have to improve dramatically to beat these. Easily the best lay of the day.

Cant help but notice on the very handing odds tables that PP has that there is a difference with horses here and there between best fixed odds available and betfair lay odds. Has anyone tried to profit from this? or is it not worth doing by the time you switch funds from account to account do you lose too much in fees to make it worth while? for example ZIPPING paying 9.0 on centrebet can be layed on betfair at 8.60
other examples for tomorrow -

TRUSTING 19.0 sportsbet 18.50 betfair
PURPLE 34.00 sportsbet 32.00 betfair

any thoughts?

Pluggerduck

 wrote Mar 5 2010 at 7:42am2010-03-05 07:42:10

That's arbitraging Moonshine and i do it sometimes, but the liquidity in our markets don't make it viable to do all the time and if you get caught bookies will ban you. Just say you back trusting at 19's for $1000 and lay off at $18.50 for ???? ahhhh see there has be the same amount available to guarantee the profit. I make much more trading with BETTRADER EVOLUTION...

Moonshine

 wrote Mar 5 2010 at 10:12am2010-03-05 10:12:49

yeah i figured it was too good to be true. i think ill try out my new strategy for betfair of following horses into big races and laying off when they shorten. An example being Extra Zero on 81.00 on Betfair for the Donny and after he comes storming home tomorrow even without winning should shorten considerably and for that should try it with Vision and Power currently 41.00. What are your thoughts?

Next time lay it when i put up the next lay of the day and then back it when i post to tell you too....i guarantee i can make a guarnteed profit for anyone who's up for it(before the race is even run but you have to have a betfair account).....if you need any advice just ask me ! eg how much to back it for depending on if you want a free bet or green up....:-)

I tried doing this on mooney valley night meetings, good idea but you need many thousand dollars in your account for it to be worth while although making a profit is always worthwhile,eg laying at $5.60 x $100 then back it $63 x $9 if it wins your square if it loses you make $37 bucks is this the correct method of laying horses?

Pluggerduck

 wrote Mar 9 2010 at 11:25am2010-03-09 11:25:59

Ping that is trading and if you had of layed it at $5.60 for $100 and backed it at $9 for $62.50 in a 7 horse field you could of made a guaranteed profit (anyhorse can win) of around $38....do that on five times for the day and youv'e made a profit of around $200...no risk..

Tune in saturday morning when i recommened a horse to lay on betfair, i will then post abit later to advise when to back it and how much for too make a guaranteed profit no matter who wins the race.....hopefully i pick the right one to drift big enough to show a good example of what can be achieved.

toptipster

 wrote Mar 9 2010 at 11:47am2010-03-09 11:47:11

Plugga, you are over-simplifying the situation to make it sound easier than it is.........and there is most definitely a risk......and you know it....

In the example above.......if you lay the horse at $5.60 and it comes in rather than drifting out, then you're stuck with a position you cannot trade out of.........This is as likely to occur as the scenario you describe (hope for, more like...)where the price goes out and allows you to back and thus make a profit......there is no such thing as a "no risk" position in trading........so please don't encourage people to dabble in trading by saying something that just isn't correct...........

It's learning how to read the markets that's the hardest part and i am now starting to consistently make profits on the uk markets....I wouldn't suggest anyone to trade on aussie provincial horse markets unless you know what your doing because the liquidity is so small and you can do some real damage financially.....stay tuned for my lay at about 11am -11.20am and do EXACTLY what i say....

Not sure why it's $7 in the prepost markets as it's overall times and record are very average. There are four much better chances in the race in NEESON, LOOKING FUR LANG, LIVIN ON THE EDGE AND TESTIMONIAL. Maybe the market is biased by his record at canterbury and his big weight drop from his last couple of runs but either way he's massively under the odds at that price. Could be a great opportunity to trade on.....i reccomened you lay it on betfair for $8 -$9+/ hopefully trade on it at around the $14 - $17 mark...and then back the top four chances with your profit...

How about next week TA you give a reason as to why your laying them..for instance today i layed MARASCO because early on in prepost markets he was $2.30 which was clearly under his true winning chance also he was beaten in a similar race last prep first up / his opposition in TARZI, TUDOR LAD and SPITFIRE ACE all had strong figures from there last run in a strong rating race, MARASCO'S figures from his five starts last prep were all a little bit below what i thought would be required to win today, they also had race fitness on MARASCO so he profiled as a clear strong lay today and longterm i am well ahead laying similar horses that profile like MARASCO.

Clearly the best lay anywhere in Australia today, ran home in good sectionals last start off a slow pace but the time was very moderate and he has only once produced figures needed to win this from nine go's. Will be back midfield on the fence and has NIKITA BERIMAN on who's S/R is terrible at 13% from her last 100 rides with loss of 35%...currently around $4.70 in the prepost markets. If he has some good systems he makes money off of then why would he share them with you and possibly cost himself money. Just to keep you happy Plugger ill tell you why i layed him. He had been beating B and C graders all prep and was taking a big step up in class. He was up against class performers in No Wine No Song, Harris Tweed and Capecover and was not entitled to even start favourite never mind even money. That was just ridiculous but i was happy there were punters out there that got lured in by him because it just made my collect even bigger :)

Also TA decided to follow you with taking him on to place also which i wasnt thinking about until i read your post so thanks alot mate :)

Also this is a public forum so that means i can post when i want and dont just have to wait until someone talks to me. Now that all that niggly waste of time sh*t is out of the way ill just get back to the original topic.

There was no way you could rate his figures clearly on top! He beat Inkster by 1.5L while No Wine No Song and Harris Tweed finished 1.2L and 2.3L behind Littorio in a G1 WFA race.last time out. If that equates to his being clearly on top then i dont want to get hold of your ratings system. IMO he was just not good enough and like toptipster said the more seasoned performers just gave him a galloping lesson today.

We all have different methods to Lay, Plugger has posted many losers on here.
Pluggers methods are different to mine clearly, but that makes it interesting.
If only I was as good at picking winners as loosers, had a shocking day backing things, so my Laying covered those bets.
There is nothing I like laying better than short favs, there figures look good, form looks good on quick inspection and they get in short! So the shorter they are the more I win. If you look at my Lays on here and on my wall I only post things in the market.
One things you must do when laying is be prepared to loose!
I do not expect to win everytime. I have done very well when I am disciplined and stick to my Lays, and thats a challange.

I guess we could have a discussion about what UNDER PERFORM means.........

Precedence performed at his best given the conditions of the race on Sat............that his figures fell below his previous best is a given..............but, the reasons he rated below his previous best have to be analysed carefully in order to make sense of them.............

He was up 2 levels in CLASS........from a listed into a G2.
He was up against more seasoned and better class opponents who could keep the pressure on him throughout the race.
He was rising in distance.........from 2400 - 2600m
He is still a 4yo
He raced inside of horses which he clearly doesn't like

In the circumstances he didn't under perform...........he's an honest, but still immature horse who is not yet up to the class he encountered on Sat..............he did his best but, on the day, he was not good enough............

toptipster

 wrote Apr 16 2010 at 1:31am2010-04-16 01:31:51

With respect TT. Can you put a horse paying $11+ (Palacio De Cristal) in a thread called "lay of the day" mate? It should be horses paying $3 or less. There will be 200 horses paying $11+ that get beat tomorrow.

Having said that I might lay Typhoon Tracy tomorrow. She is awfully drawn and there will be some "pressure" in the race. I think you can get her off at $3.40 - $3.50 right now.
She is weighted to win and I hate laying good horses, but there is something about the jockey/barrier combo, and the price, that makes me think we can take her on. And I think I've got a couple at double figure odds that can get her.

I should put a few more lays on here later/morning.

Best of luck everyone!

It's always in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? I agree with the good Dr (whilst he was under the impression that it was a lay win bet). $10 is my cut off for a lay bet. It may be 100/1 for others. It all depends on what you're prepared to risk. Don't see the correlation with odds on win bets, myself.

dr.whiz

 wrote Apr 16 2010 at 1:01pm2010-04-16 13:01:27

Sorry, fair enough. I didn't realise what you mentioned about it being a place lay. No offence meant.

You're right, no one has decided what price a "lay of the day" should be. But when people put up "best bets" at $1.10 they are often (rightly or wrongly) met with some derision.

Whatever a punter's personal limit is, is ok with me. I try to get them off at $3 or less, $4 at the most. If $5 is your level that is cool, I admire that in previous weeks you have been happy to take on some faves. That is what gets me interested about laying runners, when people want to take on the shorties.

good luck tomorrow

Plugga, re Precedence's sectionals at Flemington, they were exceptional - to the point that they are almost impossible to emulate consecutively. You of all people should know that. He had never done that before, and is unlikely to do it again until next prep. The speed was on massively that day, which assisted his final sectional no end. Excellent horse, though.

As Sinestro points out, horses will often be unable to reproduce a pb rating (whether time or class/wgt) at their next run(s)...........it could be that Precedence reverted to his average performance after the pb...............maybe he over-performed at Flemington.........

Randwick R4 No.3 ABOVE AVERAGE

Has been heavily supported in the prepost markets as he was last start and is now into around the $5 mark, but those figures from his last race just don't justify his price, he will more likely get back again today and he would have to improve significantly to be winning this today, i figure the owners and stable hands are just buttering up again. Good decision cim85.
You cant forget Definitely Ready getting run down on cup day at 1.50. Last start Caulfield winner off a Handicap, up to Group1 company! I thought they were kidding themselves.
I dont care what times it ran, its going in a new direction with no huge weight relief up to GROUP 1 race. vs Group winners

QUIZ TIME!!! Who made this recent quote?
"My Lay of the Day (for the Place) is: Randwick Race 7 No4 ORTENSIA..............not up to G1 class and has never produced her best ratings 1st up"
Was it:

B: Harold Holt
C: David Hasslehoff

God he's only won 2 out of 4 and placed 3 out of 4 first up.

For those who follow the Lays, I find it best to Lay to Loose a certain amount. So the shorter the Lay the better the return. If anyone has been following my Lays, you should be ahead, as there have been odds on and couple in the $2-$2.50 range.
Unfortunately I cannot sell my Lays yet, but in the meantime, I will keep posting a few on here.

Your not going to loose much laying odds on toptipster, so no harm there. I like it but not keen when its so short.
For those who do not have a betfair account or dont like to Lay, if you are following these then you can consider these horses to pot when cosidering multis trifectas win bets etc. You dont need to Lay them per say to make somehting out of them. It may help you a little with your punting.

My 2 big Lays have been scratched. Star or Octaganol and Circle of Fame.

Bad luck today Nudgey, but you should get plenty of respect from fellow layers for taking on the hot pots. I reckon the best way to get dough from this (and the most fun/best challenge) is to take on shorties.
Border Rebel maybe is a bit too talented (plus other reasons) for me to lay, but The Wingman was in the zone. The only reason I didn't lay it is because I nearly backed it.

Top stones mate, you'll get it back.

That was easy money, she was always a huge risk at 1200m on the Doomben track. However, the pace was on for her and although she had a little bump at the 300m, I thought she was below par. Dont know about her winter campaign after that

8 lays - for 1 third
ORTENSIA'S figures again proved the clock correct and i am sure many astute punters who use sectionals would of layed her knowing she would have to produce career high figures to win.
Having a good set of sectionals are invaluble for long term success laying horses on betfair.

SENSATIONAL LINE blew out a lot from this morning.
Had RED STORY at Rocky R7 sorted as well, but didn't
put it up.
At least your winning horses were very short, so damage wouldn't be great.

Pluggerduck

 wrote May 18 2010 at 8:20am2010-05-18 08:20:03

Actually imo if your staking to your bank - you actually want the longer priced horses to win because you have a greater return when the shorties lose. If your laying level stakes then obviously it's the other way around but longterm it's very hard to succeed laying this way.

xxvicelifexx

 wrote May 18 2010 at 8:50am2010-05-18 08:50:30

Ahh now i get the challenge! Ok plugger, lets have a bit of fun with each other for once.
How many lays would you like?
I think I should agree to nominate a lay in every Sydney race on Saturday, they have to be under $10.
But IF ANYONE IS READING THIS DO NOT BACK MY LAYS, IM NOT VERY GOOD AT THEM, THIS IS JUST FOR A BIT OF FUN.
But if any of my lays win, I will be more than happy to admit I failed. Watch and learn plugger!

chilipatch

 wrote May 18 2010 at 10:40am2010-05-18 10:40:32

Actually Plugger I don't follow you. I thought that the way to profits is to limit your
liabilities and boost your gains. You lose big time on one of your selections
(eg. yr horse wins at say 16 with a bet of $100, you lose $1500.) If your horse wins
at low odds yr loss is considerably less. (eg. yr horse wins at 2.5 with a bet of $100
you lose $150.) So if I collect 8 out of 10 lays at 2.5, at $100 a pop, I profit $900
(That is $1200 - $300 = $900.) One $1500 loss can wipe my bank. Why do you think
Betfair always offer the lowest odds as your best bet?

My average at the moment is about 8 out of 10, so I am looking at a consistant
$900 profit for a week. My picking winners is only average, so that probably
works in my favour.

Here's your chance to show us a better way.

ta

 wrote May 18 2010 at 11:04am2010-05-18 11:04:47

Chillipatch, I believe Pluggerduck means he is staking his bank. Eg, laying each horse for a %of Bank.
Eg is you have 1000bank, you lay for 5%, so your Liability is $50, hence the shorter the price the more you win, the longer the less you win.

Plugger if your basis is on teh fact you will loose 1 in 10 then yes the longer price the winning selection the better. But when staking %bank it doesnt matter really if you loose, when you loose the same %amount.

For those posting Lays, would be great to keep a running tally of how you are going for the Lays you post., each time.

Currently I have posted 25 selections for 3 winners.

chilipatch

 wrote May 18 2010 at 11:39am2010-05-18 11:39:18

OK, I have posted 18 selections for 3 winners (losers!). Most have been short priced.
Actually 83% which is consistant with my calculations above.

 wrote May 18 2010 at 6:58pm2010-05-18 18:58:13

a Loss of $500 can be staked over nxt 5 Lays to recoup that Loss & still make a profit

Pluggerduck

 wrote May 19 2010 at 1:36am2010-05-19 01:36:51

CHILIPATCH are you actually betting -laying your selections on betfair ? if so what is your avg div and strike rate ? You need a bank and staking plan because successful betting - laying is about maximising your profit dollars while protecting your betting capital and confidence so you can continue when faced with a significant losing period. The only way you can do this is by getting your bet size right. If you bet too much on each selection then a normally expected losing run could send you broke. If you don't bet enough then your risk will always be below the level you could actually tolerate and you won't make as much as you could (or should) with your betting capital.

Pluggerduck

 wrote May 19 2010 at 3:44am2010-05-19 03:44:20

Yes but It's all relative to the overall time because it may magnify the run due to the opposition.
I look for horses like TEE EMAR who have defied the fast pace to run very well rather than a horse who finished well off a slow pace because when your a backmarker race conditions are out of your hands and they can also cop interference especially in big fields - i'd rather back horses who control the race and sprint away as the majority of our races are run like that in Australia, in run position is vital to a horses chance because it's a major adavantge too race up on the pace.

 wrote May 21 2010 at 9:58am2010-05-21 09:58:21

Yes, good to see the sparring is over. Perhaps we should keep these discussions to 'Lay Of The Day'. That means all who want to, put up their best Lay and leave it as that. Then the guys who wish to lay horses can have a bit of confidence in laying those tipsters with whom they feel the most comfortable. Keep a record of all your successful lays and end your post with the success % to date. E.g. mine to date is 77%. Then when (if) actual laying tipping comes in, there is an actual track record for punters to look at.

For those who wish to discuss the merits and otherwise of the various aspects of laying, use Plugger's new discussion column of 'Lay Of The Day 2'.

What do you guys think? Only you can make it work, or not!

Do I 'load' up all the time??? Have a last look saturday at the feature races. How many times did I say I was going to 'Load' up on horses I liked???

I have just about had enough of this crap that nuffies like you's come up with. If you dont have anything good to say, dont say it at all... Starting today Im temporarily 'banning' myself from this site until grubs like you's two sub out or clean up your act!

I just can't cop blokes who pretend to punt like the big boys when they obviously don't. Punt a lot - probably. Punt big - definitely not, esp when you admit you can't afford Pay TV. Words like 'smash' and 'loading up' don't spring to mind for the bets of those sort of blokes.

chilli

 wrote Jun 1 2010 at 6:51am2010-06-01 06:51:44

yeah BABYRAG but why the issue... theres no need to point out something based upon your perception that is detrimental or can be easily construed as unwarranted criticism. Just ignore it based upon the fact that you have little confidence in it... you know what they say mate... its the bloke sitting quietly in the corner that you should worry about the most. Not the clown taking his shirt off!
Apart from that its all relative mate... if youre a $10 e/w punter having a $50 win bet on a fancy... thats smashing it in relation to their ordinary bet. Its not up to us to criticise the stake amount?? Thats what we love about the game... takes all sorts, sizes and shapes.
I only lay if ive got massive overs from early markets or the dreaded Allin LAYKING so im not the best person to discuss laying nags. I do know Nudgey is very astute at picking a race and subsequently the right horse to back which i assume would mean the right horse NOT to back as well if thats what you are getting at? In fact NUDGEYS lay of the day on the wekend was ORTENSIA which in my opinion was an extremely dangerous laying proposition... she didnt fire and NUDGEYs advice was spot on in a massive race where there would have been a massive risk attached due to potential size of the pool. Anyone who followed that advice wouldve made a helluva profit. Hardly worth criticsim.

Ive been on this site longer than all of you put together so i will pull the age and experience rank a bit in the hope that we can get this forum back on track in order for the Punters that buy our tips and read our posts dont continue to think we are a bunch of sooking schoolgirls... NUDGEY has earnt the right NOT to explain his laytips anymore... you either trust his judgement based upon the years and many hours he has put into the site offering his opinions and advice completely free of charge. He is one of the top contributors to this site and has been so for a long long time... he deserves your respect not your criticism. I know NUDGEY does his homework and i dont need him to explain anything to me and neither does his clientele... he has earned his reputation and he has the nads to put it on the line day in and day out similar to myself and a bunch of other more worthy contributors. I cant help but notice that the people criticising do NOT contribute anywhere near as much and do NOT put their PP reputations on the line.
This post is followed by a large number of punters and it belongs to them not to you and your criticism. If youre not a believer then just leave the post alone and let us that listen and respect NUDGEYS advice follow his tips without all this cluster of garbage.
NUDGEY can you please start another post under a similar title so that we dont have to scroll through all this crap to get to your thoughts.
Might i add that it is a distinct pleasure to read your thoughts on every race that you investigate and that the majority of people on this site and the Punters totally appreciate the time you put in to post these thoughts. Contributors like yourself are exactly what makes this sight so endearing and worthwhile to myself when i log in and analyse the forthcoming day on the punt.

BAAGZ i try to post a reason as to why i want to lay a particular horse, but it's just time consuming especially at that time of the day. I must admit though that a few on here just lay on a hunch without doing there homework and having some good reasoning behind there lay.
Each for there own i say and really who actually lay's other people's lay's on here without being able to see there previous history.

It would be nice to know when lay tips are starting ? the sooner the better i say. Might stop all this chitter chat, this site's slowly becoming a tennis match of utter jitter jatter and nothing purposeful to be gained in reading these threads. Put me there as well, no more though.

As for the "rif raf" that i just read, give it a break guys and respect the info we read on this site weather you like it or not, i myself have had huge success following TheNudge both his lays and his bought tips. Its punting on animals and the jockeys that ride them therefore we can only predict what will happen in a race and post our opinion then we have to sit back and hope that the horse shows up and the jockey gets some luck..... we all know how unpredictable they both are. If you are one to criticize on someones selections or opinions then thats ok you dont have to agree, but give your reasons why you dont agree and if your right then this will gain you respect from others on the site, cause i can assure you bitching about someone doesn't. Good luck to all.

I really like IGLES STAR it led last start running really good sectionals and won quite easy in the end at the gold coast. No doubt the class runner is PELLIZOTTI but he might be too far away come the the last furlong and this may be the difference between the two. If IGLES STAR can run similar closing sectionals PELLIZOTTI will find it very difficult to beat it over the short sprint distance.

You know, I don't apologize for putting up my lays without giving reasons for my selections. I spend a lot of time sorting through all the rubble to end up hopefully with a selection that meets my criteria, that is 5 or below to be in the range of a reasonable bank. I guess anyone with an unlimited bank, can pick the outsider and do well. However one loss (win) can do a hell of a lot of damage, even to the best of banks.

Anyway, I have been keeping a record of all my Lay selections on the 'Lay of the day' discussion. This is presented as an Excel spreadsheet. It's all on record, and runs from 24/4/10 to 3/6/10. As discussed above, no lay is acted on if the SP (or whatever you can get) is over 5.1. This keeps the bank in reasonable order.

I have decided to make it available to PP's members, if they wish to have a look. The spreadsheet runs on Excel 2000 or later. The spreadsheet will allow you to change the amount layed and the SP figures, so you can play around with the type of money you would normally spend. Can be quite fun actually.

This spreadsheet works on a level stake, but you can just take a %age of your bank and put that in if you wish. I am working on a spreadsheet that will operate with a bank %age at the moment.

In this example I have used $100 as the lay investment, and this has produced a profit of $2,292.00 from 24/4/10 until 3/6/10. Not bad really, as that is profit! You would need a bank of between $700 & $1000 to feel safe. However dropping your level stake would reduce the need for the bank to be that much.

If anyone is interested, leave your username and an email contact on my wall chilipatch and I will email it to you as an attachment. I will delete them daily, as I respect your privacy. Can also supply as an Open Office document if required.

I put all todays Lay's on my spreadsheet at SP's and $100 level stakes.

The total profit for today is: $5220.00, but you would need a fairly large bank to be able to follow them through at the $100, e.g. $1700.
However for a measly $10 a pop you would get $522.00. Still pretty good for an investment of $170. 207% profit.
I wonder if anyone followed them through.

$4.60 betfair in the feature 2YO Magic Millions National Plate today but lacks any of the qualities needed for a good betting proposition.

Sure he's been racing in harder events but he's been well beaten many times and the races he has been somewhat competitive have been in poor figure races. His speed figures only rank middle of the field here against some well credentialled types still on the way up.

With speed outside I can see him midfield on the fence here, locked away needing plenty of luck at the right time. Add to that jockey K Pope who's winning record on genuine chances which rates in the bottom 20% of all jockeys Australia wide and there is absolutely nothing to instill betting confidence.

What about this misguided soul who got matched $100 at 340/1 for Miss Maher at Geelong this afternoon... you couldn't live with yourself could you? Why you would even lay a horse at those odds is beyond me, his minuscule potential collect in no way matches the risk (now reality) of a $34k payout!

Well today was the first day I have tried laying, and was possibly the best day to lay favorite I have seen for a while. I have seen the popularity of laying grow and grow with people actually selling tips for horses to lay. What I am looking for is some advice and or direction in where to look for more information on laying and how to be profitable doing so. Thanks in advance for any help and advice you can give.

Both in Race 6.........No1 Hierarchy ($4.00) and No5 Pellizotti ($3.80) .......... don't bet if they drift over $5.00....good luck everyone

Why lay two in the same race? Anyone laying at SP would have lost with level stakes.

toptipster

 wrote Jun 14 2010 at 8:13am2010-06-14 08:13:05

In any race were I am confident of selecting the winner, then it reasonable and sensible to lay all other horses below a certain price...........say $5.00. Not only do you reduce your liability.........you also increase your potential return...............that's what the bookies do...........

In the case of my Lay bets today I would have doubled my return if both had lost.............unfortunately I got it wrong and Pellizotti won.............If I had only laid Pellizotti.........my liability (and subsequent loss) would have been greater...........

Hope that answers your question chilipatch............

Thanks for that toptipster, I can see where you are coming from. I also try to select the winner, then look to see what is available at $5 or under, but only lay one as the more short lays you take the more likely you are to strike the winner, as you have shown above.

Last start made signifcant ground but the race was run in only moderate time with closing moderate sectionals, it's overall figures only rank about 6th so will need to produce career best figures to win this. Backing horse's of this profile will leave you well short longterm because predicting how fast a horse can run is impossible.

You are far better off in the long run avoiding horses that "must reach a new peak to win"... save your money for horses that have proven themselves capable of reaching the right level of performance.

I am not getting this lay betting, are your lays ta ones you think will start to short and so you take them at the high price and sell them at the shorter price, or are they horses you dont think can win. Just am a little unsure as you put up your lays and then later you mention to chilli that woorim was your best yet you dont mention woorim in your lays earlier. Or are you saying to chilli that woorim was your best win bet of the day. I am not being a smart ass i just often check what you guys have as lays and leave them out of my multiples to make it a little cheaper.

ta

 wrote Jun 26 2010 at 3:26am2010-06-26 03:26:38

popo. I mean Woorim was my best WIN bet of the day, I had Hus der Lieften as the Lay in that race.

Podo, eg so far I had 3 lays go under with Tunahog winning. I just laid Stoneblack under $3 and $2 in running, and $1.39Place. Tunohog won, I laid it at 3.5 so with the other 3 going under I am just ahead now if betting straight out.

podo

OK now explain to me again.... 1st you lay melito as in you dont think it can win. Then all of a sudden melito jumps from out wide and leads.... you seem to think that its in a good position ?????and decide to back it with 100m to go PLEASE ta your kidding me. Your credibility IMO has just been stretched out the length of the Flemington.
How could someone follow you when one minute ( before the race keep in mind ) you say to lay a horse and then ( after the race ) you post that you backed it. Give it a rest PLEASE Your a joke.

ta

 wrote Jun 26 2010 at 7:36am2010-06-26 07:36:38

HA Podo, Pretty simple, I laid it and to me it looked like i was going to get loose, so I tried to soften the loss by backing it at very short odds to make the loss less. I get matched at $8 which was very lucky. when i asked for very short odds.
I always bet in runing if i am watching from home. If I look like im going to loose, I back the horse at whatever I can get

PODO, Im not worried if people follow me, what do I get our of it exactly. Nothing!

podo

 wrote Jun 26 2010 at 9:37am2010-06-26 09:37:40

The sites not really for gloating its more for sharing information, I have been a backer of yours and follow your success of your lays, what is a real kick in the guts is when you post a lay and then it wins you then tell your followers you won on the horse. Not a real good feeling. But we all bet differently and i can understand now the way your doing it, I take all i said back i just had know idea you could back horses after they jump. Its something i will have to look into. I again apologize for bagging you, Just didn't seem correct that you lay it then back it. i am guessing its a betfair thing which if so i will try to get into it, as i seem to go better picking horses in running then i do b4 the jump. Sorry [ta}

ta

 wrote Jun 26 2010 at 10:18am2010-06-26 10:18:49

Podo, it wasnt gloating at all, I was just highlighting the massive odds you can get sometimes in running.
I did exactly the same thing with Tunahog that won, I backed it for a much as I willing to risk once I saw it loom up and was going to win, that time i got 1.03 or 1.04 very short, I still lost a stack on it, but just try to cut the loss by a little if I can.
My comment was a big save for me. I didnt win podo, i saved a heap of what I would have lost.

Podo I post my Lays for Free, i get nothing out of it. If you have been following me, then I hope you have had some success. Its best to use your own judgement also, if you think one of my lays will win, then dont lay it.

Yes Betfair bets in running and if you are Laying, then you should be looking into it, as you can lay off some liability in running if the odds go out.

podo

 wrote Jun 26 2010 at 11:11am2010-06-26 11:11:43

I understand ta thanks for your reply, and yes i have followed your lays with great success. I still am not clear exactly what laying really means, can you help explain, Does it mean if someone lays a horse that they dont think its a winning chance or do they think its a risk at the odds its at or do they pick something at longer odds that they think may shorten and therefore sell some of it at a shorter price before the jump. Hope that all doesn't sound weird but i have know idea about laying or the term laying. Thanks

Pluggerduck

 wrote Jun 26 2010 at 1:19pm2010-06-26 13:19:02

Podo here's an example but the best way to learn is by experience mate, cutting your losses is possible as ta outlines but what happens if the horse then loses ? double whammy, so i wouldn't advise that until your an experinced betfair user. If and when you join up with betfair i'd advise you get a betting tool such as bet angel or imo the best one GEEKSTOY which is free to help you trade etc

Sometimes ta, but try to come out near evens on the plus side if poss. Take Eggypop, kept shortening, so no show there, but I took my selection to win (Stallone) with Eggypop as an A2 which paid $7.20 in our market to cover myself. Things don't always work out, as that is racing, but there are ways to try and cover when you see a horse shortening like Eggypop did. Teary Eyed and Ironstein I didn't lay, because in all honesty, I only lay myself when lay becomes 3 or under, and the closest Ironstein got that I saw was 4.80. The story I find is patience.

It's early doors but R1 No8 at Newcastle is showing $1.50 in the paper. Ridiculous, and if you can get off at $2 it sounds like a bargain. Satisfies most of the easy guidelines for laying.

i wish you did get it up in time chillipatch. i got tipped atomic force as the best bet of the day and had it going for $2497 in doubles. I had $100 on 4 horses that i thought may be a threat to atomic force so i would get some sort of collect and didn't have Yoburg in the 4 so i lost another $400 on top. chilipatch

I state CHATTERCHIC is a lay. I am sometimes asked who do I think will beat the lay, so I tried to add my thoughts on that. If you took the Quinella, good, I did. nicki78, do you think I should just stick to a lay and leave it at that?

nicki78

 wrote Jul 12 2010 at 11:05am2010-07-12 11:05:08

Why would you take the quinella if you said ESPRIT LAD would probaly go for the doctor, i don't understand what you meant by that statement and KOMACHI's might finish on , if you thought CHATTERCHIC was a good lay why not take an exacta or trifecta how did you get the QUINELLA ?
- You didn't think CHATTERCHIC would finish 1st ?

podo

 wrote Jul 12 2010 at 11:13am2010-07-12 11:13:53

Chatterchic didn't win in run second, and his one he picks ESPRIT LAD one. I see nothing wrong with that. It was a great lay in the end.

chilipatch

 wrote Jul 12 2010 at 11:56am2010-07-12 11:56:34

nicki78, 'go for the doctor' is an old phrase that has a meaning to us older people, it means jump out quick and go like hell and hope he can hold on at the finish. That's exactly what Esprit Lad did. I picked that Chatterchic would not win, but didn't say it wouldn't get second. I only mentioned the Quinella because you asked me was it a lay or Quinella. Turned out it was actually a lay, quinella and exactor. Not a bad result in the end.

Laying is good, but you better watch that you lay and not back, I thought I layed Carbine Steet at Belmont, for a stake of $200 at $2.38, and was cheering when it wasn't performing, Only to find out minutes later I actually baked the thing. Did lay Mahaffey Road in the NT Derby at $1.70 so got it back, But was up and down for alot of the day with no thanks to Atomic Force and Breitling

I've also found that if you play the night markets overseas, you can pretty well guarantee yourself a greenbook on every race. Lay your horse before the race, and back it at the price you want before they jump as well. And this will get matched within a few Secs of the race having Jumped.as there markets are a lot bigger than ours

Anyone else got any tips on greenbooking?

yes they do nudge it's all relative to each individual race - he's clearly bad value today being that he's going around the melb way first time ever, will more than likely be locked away midfield on the fence and the distinct lack of pace in this race. All these factors add up to a bad bet, but good luck pal

Canberra r2 OUR BARNEY a risk on dry????

When I did the form for this race, I was very keen on OUR BARNEY! LIghtly raced Guy Walter galloper who should go straight to the front and enjoy a very soft lead with top front running jock O'HARA on board. I was going to price it about 1.50 before I noticed that its dry track record is quite poor:
4/0-1-0. And compares quite poorly with its dead track record- 4/3-0-0. After reconsidering this I have re-assessed it as a 2.62 chance (13/8 in the old and my markets are priced to 100%).
As a result I am going to lay OUR BARNEY if it goes around at odds on. Only a moderate lay however.

Sydney R8 no9

Whitefriars - form on paper looks excellent but what you won't see is that his figures only rank moderately here and at it's current price is under the odds.

Caulfield

Definitely ready
poor finishing figures last start would have to improve significantly to be winning this. Looks as though imo that at this point he's only of listed ability. Soul had outstanding figures last start and buffering has since franked that good rating race. Soul is by commands who are noted mudlarks. Closely related to papanick whose mudda was a mudda

Doomben R7 No.2
Brave The Way

Currently $3 in the Pre-post markets which is clearly way under it's true winning chance in this race.
Obviously the market is basing it's price on it's competitive runs over further distances in better class because it's figures in this are only just competive over this distance. Add the fact that it's a get back horse in a big field which is only going to make the task ahead much much harder.
Is the clear lay in this race and i hope all you player haters back it because of me laying it on betfair !!
Horses's profiling "haha" as Brave the way is 2morrow will have your pokets empty very quickly....

Plugger, who have you got as the main chances?
I would mark it at a lay at 2.50, but I struggle to find anything i have confidence in this race.
I do think you will get better in running, as it will get back as you say

Yeah with Point Pain out Sway To Go looks the only other danger, not sure it's worth the risk at 3.6-3.8

Good run by Brave the way because it was an impossibility to win the way the race panned out with the leader Sway to go running only 36 secs for the first 600 and running home in 34 flat. Just outlines how important in run positions are...front 2 at the 600m ended up 1,2 at the finish post. Did have the best last 200 split obviously needing a genuine tempo and further.

Btw i will make it clear now I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL PUNTER and have never stated this but i do take it very seriously and have shown a positve pot for the last two years but i make most of my money of late trading and betting in the run. I have read many books articles and other imformative information to increase my knowledge on horse racing. So call me dumb for doing so ! maybe i do come across as a know it all sometimes but believe me i am just opionated thats's all.

One other thing i will say is that if you listen and follow the general public in horse racing you will lose bigtime because a majority of there thoughts and beliefs are wrong such as there thoughts on weight.
You need to investigate and research yourself because otherwise you will never realise how wrong they are in alot of aspects about the punt

I was interested in your comment Pluggerduck 'i make most of my money of late trading and betting in the run'. While I don't 'bet in the run', I find my selections are much better with some fine tuning immediately before the jump, and I quite often dump my earlier tip for one of the other runners I was favouring. Sometimes it's wrong, but many times the final selection comes up trumps, with the original only placed or out of the money. I notice you plug (no pun intended) along most of the time with your head just above water with the level betting, but with the small returns, it's very hard to make good money. That's another reason to invest late, as you can see the price crashing with the late money.
