Yes he was trying to win the race, but the act he produced was just clear and utter stupidity. His ride on Numen Lumen was poor yes, but what about Schofield on Kulax at Warwick Farm recently when he eased up on the line when it appeared he could have won, or Pumper on Western Symbol? Sat in the middle, got shuffled back and was a tragedy beaten. Yet they got nothing.

Nudge, i had lunch with the trainer not to long ago and asked him about it. He was very crook on Melham i can tell you. The difference between Melham and your examples is that he was riding the winner of that race previously, he is connected to the winning horse through family, and one D Nikolic was the winning jockey. As a rider i like Melham but this was not a good decision by him.
