The iconic Adelaide Oval will get a $535 million facelift which will make the South Australian venue a multi-purpose stadium capable of hosting AFL matches in the future.
More than 12,000 members of the SA Cricket Association (SACA) voted on Monday night, with more 80 percent agreeing to allow the ground to be redeveloped.
The Rann government pledged $535 million for the project, with SACA members asked to share control of the inner city ground with football.
As part of the redevelopment the Oval will become a 50,000 capacity stadium in a deal which also clears SACA's $85m debt.
"This decision heralds a new era for cricket and football in South Australia with benefits over the coming decades for the State as a whole," SACA President Ian McLachlan said.
"It is the result of years of negotiations and detailed work by many people and the vision of the State Government to fund this important improvement in South Australia's infrastructure."
"I want to thank our members for their support and can assure them and all South Australians that we will work very hard with football, the State Government and the Adelaide City Council to successfully implement this great project."
The decision was music to the ears of AFL club Port Adelaide, who are confident their financial future is secured following the vote.
Both the Power and Adelaide Crows will move their home games to Adelaide Oval from 2014, with Port expecting to be $3.5m a year better off.
"This provides our club with the breakthrough strategy it needs to become financially independent and secure and to become truly competitive with the richer clubs in the AFL," Port president Brett Duncanson said.
"The plans for Adelaide Oval are absolutely magnificent," he said.
"Adelaide will get a central sporting facility that will be the envy of cities around Australia and the world."
